Ma è impegnato in giochi molto più pericolosi dei nostri, e i suoi nemici sono in cerca di sangue. Winston ha il mio cuore, i Morelli hanno foto incriminanti, e non mi resta altro che tre fratellastri che vogliono farmi del male e un futuro in dubbio. Sapevo che Winston non sarebbe stato il mio principe azzurro, ma questo non mi ha impedito di innamorarmi di lui. Dopotutto, le scarpette si adattano, e mi sono permessa di credere che avrei ballato con Winston per sempre. Finché non viene alla luce troppa verità. Finché non mi renderò conto che invece di governare il gioco, ero solo un pedone. Alla fine, ho solo una domanda. Siamo alla fine di questo viaggio nella moderna versione di Cenerentola con questi insoliti Principe Azzurro e Cenerentola, Winston e Ash: la resa di conti con la famiglia Morelli, rivale dei Constantine da sempre, e lo strano e particolare rapporto tra Winston e Ash sono il filo conduttore di questo ultimo capitolo. È letteralmente una guerra: le immagini intime di Winston e Ash sono state diffuse on-line dai Morelli, con l’aiuto dei fratellastri di Ash. Ma mentre abbiamo imparato a conoscere il gelido Winston e le sue studiate mosse vincenti da freddo giocatore di scacchi, in questo terzo volume è Ash che si rivela ancora un personaggio diverso.

«Non ci saranno lacrime oggi. O vergogna o umiliazione. No, questa è la guerra, ho le armi più potenti per lottare. Ho scelto da che parte stare, e anche se è diventato stressante con Leo che mi ricattava, so di non aver fatto nulla per vendere i Constantine. Tutto quello che ho detto a Leo era comunque una bugia. Ancora Team Constantine. Fino in fondo.»

Non solo è dalla parte di tutti i Constantine, madre inclusa, ma agisce per difenderli perché sa di aver “umanizzato” Winston facendogli abbassare la guardia, perché lei non lo ha mai, mai giudicato e si è avvicinata a lui essendo semplicemente se stessa, con le sue caramelle, il suo piccolo uccellino e i suoi abbracci. Anche il suo rapporto con la madre di Winston non è più un subire, ma essere sullo stesso piano: una Ash diversa, matura, che non solo, ama ma che protegge fino in fondo chi ama. E dall’altra parte Winston, con il suo amore che parte dal rimpianto, ma che diventa tutto per lui, soprattutto essere se stesso senza nascondersi come ha fatto per tutta la sua vita.

«Non ha il sapore del rimpianto: ha il sapore della felicità e non riesco ad assaporarlo abbastanza velocemente, affamato di sentire un'emozione che mi rende così felice, qualcosa che mi sono negato per troppo tempo.»

Non è una fiaba questo terzo volume, la scarpetta di cristallo non è persa, ma ritrovata per combattere una guerra dove tutti i segreti, gli inganni vengono scoperti e i legami del passato tornano in uno strano e contorto modo che rende la lettura davvero interessante e con un colpo di scena che davvero non ci aspettiamo. Per questo le poche scene “hot” risultano assolutamente ben inserite e coerenti con uno schema narrativo molto diverso dai primi due volumi. Cari Magnetici, questa particolare e insolita versione di Cenerentola ci lascia con un epilogo che risulta perfetto, per due personaggi così diversi e legati da un rapporto così particolare. Una lettura potente, intensa, che permette un viaggio nelle emozioni più dure e nascoste in un mondo così diverso come quello della famiglia Constantine. Una lettura che possiamo solo sperare venga proposta anche a noi lettori italiani proprio perché così particolare.

We are at the end of this journey in the modern version of Cinderella with these unusual Prince Charming and Cinderella, Winston and Ash: the showdown with the Morelli family, a long-time rival of the Constantines, and the strange and particular relationship between Winston and Ash are the common thread of this last chapter. It's literally a war: intimate images of Winston and Ash were circulated online by the Morelli, with the help of Ash's half-brothers. But as we learn about the icy Winston and his studied winning moves as a cold chess player, in this third volume it is Ash who still turns out to be a different character.

«There won’t be tears today. Or shame or humiliation or beartache. No, this is war, I am bringing the big guns to the fight. I chose a side, and though it got stressful with Leo blackmailing me, I know I haven’t done anything to sell out the Constantines. Everything I did tell Leo was a lie anyway. Still Team Constantine. All the way.»

Not only she is on the side of all “Team Constantine”, including their mother, but she acts to defend them because she knows she has "humanized" Winston by lowering her guard, because she has never judged him and has approached him by simply being herself, with her candy, her little bird and her hugs. Even her relationship with Winston's mother is no longer a sufferer, but to be on the same level: a different, mature Ash, who not only loves but protects those she loves to the end. Opposite to her, Winston, with his love starting from regret but that becomes everything for him, especially being himself without hiding as he has done all his life.

This third volume is not a fairy tale, the glass slipper is not lost but found to fight a war where all the secrets, deceptions are discovered and the bonds of the past return in a strange and twisted way that makes reading really interesting and with a PLOT that we really do not expect. For this reason the few "hot&" scenes are absolutely well inserted and consistent with a narrative scheme very different from the first two volumes. Dear Magnetici, this particular and unusual version of Cinderella leaves us with an epilogue that is perfect, for two characters so different and bound by such a particular relationship. A powerful, intense reading, which allows a journey into the harshest and most hidden emotions in a world as different as that of the Constantine family. A reading that we can only hope will also be proposed to us Italian readers precisely because it is so particular.
