I soldi possono comprare qualsiasi cosa. E chiunque. Come capo della famiglia Costantine, sono abituato a persone che si inchinano alla mia volontà. Questa è la storia di una Cenerentola molto particolare, una storia cruda, difficile, non per tutti e che non termina alla fine del volume. Ash è la nostra Cenerentola, con un padre debole e una matrigna cattiva, stavolta chirurgo plastico dei ricchi, che le hanno dilapidato tutto il fondo destinato al College; per questo motivo lei lavora come donna delle pulizie in uno dei grattacieli della famiglia Constantine, di cui Winston è il capo. Non c’è una scarpetta, ma una semplice carta di una caramella, che lei lascia inavvertitamente nell’ufficio di lui: e fin qui abbiamo la fiaba. Ma appena i due si incontrano la storia diventa tutt’altro: lui è un uomo molto più grande, è scaltro e usa i problemi di Ash per tenerla in suo potere. Il loro è un rapporto di dipendenza e sfida allo stesso tempo e che li lega in modo perverso e forte fin da subito.

«In meno di trenta minuti, quest'uomo ha completamente trasformato chi pensavo di essere. Ho paura a pensare a quello che può fare in un giorno o due, o una settimana. Mi distruggerà. Quel che è peggio, è che glielo lascerò fare.»

Ash è una ragazza sola: molestata dai fratellastri e senza un soldo, vede in Winston l’unica via d’uscita, ma si detesta per come lui riesca a manipolarla. Per quanto lui ci appaia quasi come un mostro, un maniaco (e vi posso assicurare che ci sono scene davvero forti per noi lettori!), non riusciamo a odiarlo: c’è di più in lui e lo intravediamo in come si lascia andare con lei.

"Tu sei sul punto di distruggermi, Ash. Distruggerai l'uomo che ho combattuto così a lungo per diventare". Si allontana per studiarmi. "E, bellezza, non riesco a trovare in me nulla per fregarmene un accidente."

Non è un principe azzurro, piuttosto un “cattivo positivo”, un uomo solo che, attraverso la sua infinita ricchezza, domina il mondo che lo circonda: quando capisce che, per quanto in difficoltà, ad Ash non interessano più i suoi soldi, inizia ad attirarla verso di sé offrendole quell’affetto che le manca. Non è una storia facile questa, sia per il tipo di rapporto tra i due sia per come gestiscono l’intimità; se la leggerete (e ve lo consiglio), capirete Ash e tutta la sua solitudine e di come questo sentimento ci spinga spesso a fare cose impensabili. Anche i cattivi in questo romanzo sono veri cattivi, freddi crudeli, violenti: il loro linguaggio è assolutamente coerente con le loro azioni e sono certa che anche il loro epilogo lascerà senza fiato. Non ci resta dunque che attendere il secondo volume, che uscirà a breve, per scoprire come la nostra “principessa salverà il cattivo”.

This is the story of a very particular Cinderella, a raw, difficult story, not for everyone and that does not end at the end of the book. Ash is our Cinderella, with a weak father and a bad stepmother, this time she is a plastic surgeon, who have squandered all the funding destined for College; for this reason she works as a cleaning lady in one of the skyscrapers of the Constantine family, of which Winston is the CEO. There is not a cristal slipper but a simple card of a candy, which she inadvertently leaves in his office: and so far we have the fairy tale. But as soon as the two meet the story becomes another story: he is a much older than she, he is shrewd and uses Ash's problems to keep her in power. Theirs is a relationship of addiction and challenge at the same time and that binds them in a perverse and strong way right away.

«In less than thirty minutes, this man completely transformed who I thought I was. I dread to think what he could do in a day or two, or a week. He’s going to destroy me. What’s worse, I’ll let him.»

Ash is a single girl: harassed by her half-brothers and penniless, she sees Winston as the only way out but loathes herself for how he manages to manipulate her. As much as he seems to us almost like a monster, a maniac (and I can assure you that there are really strong scenes for us readers!), we can't hate him: there's more to him and we catch a glimpse of him in how he lets go with her.

”You’re going to break me, Ash. It’s going to destroy the man I’ve fought so hard to become”. He pulls away to study me. “And, beautiful, I can’t find it in me to give a damn.”

He is not a prince charming, rather a "positive villain", a single man who, through his infinite wealth, dominates the world around him: when he understands that, however distressed, Ash no longer cares about his money, he begins to lure her towards himself by offering her that affection that she lacks. This is not an easy story, both for the kind of relationship between the two and for how they manage intimacy; if you read it (and I advise you), you will understand Ash and all his loneliness and how this feeling often pushes us to do unthinkable things. Even the villains in this novel are real villains, cruel cold, violent: their language is absolutely consistent with their actions and I am sure that even their epilogue will leave you breathless. We therefore just have to wait for the second volume, which will be published shortly, to find out how our "princess will save the villain".
