Ci sono gli uomini. E poi c'è Blake Anderson: era il mio migliore amico. Fino a quando non me ne sono andata. Dieci anni di distanza lo hanno trasformato in un bel muro di muscoli, robusto e tatuato: ha perfino un suo fan club, dopo il successo del suo show di sopravvivenza televisivo di grande successo. Lo chiamano Mr. Wild, e una notte mi mostra quanto sia selvaggio: per un momento, quasi credo di nuovo nella magia. Quasi. Ma quegli anni lontani hanno cambiato anche me, non sono più la ragazza che una volta conosceva. Pensavo che fuggire dal mio passato mi avrebbe impedito di sentirmi intrappolata. E se essere catturata da Mr. Wild fosse l'unica cosa che può liberarmi?

Sono passati dieci anni da quando si sono visti per l’ultima volta Daisy e Blake, da quell’ultima sera al lago, quando lei, un po' alticcia, ha trovato il coraggio di dargli un bacio. Dieci anni e una vita intera in due parti del continente diverse, poiché lei è tornata in Inghilterra ed entrambi hanno un vissuto differentemente: Daisy non è più la stessa, sia nell’aspetto che nei sentimenti. In una prima parte del libro è proprio questo che Blake non vuole accettare. Non sono solo i suoi capelli ma quella ragazza spensierata, delle estati al lago, non c’è più: la vita le ha riservato non poche delusioni e sofferenze, non ultima una relazione che oltre alla violenza, le ha fatto vivere dei momenti che l’hanno portata a sentirsi responsabile della morte del suo amato cagnolino. Per questo tornare in California è per Daisy una sorta di rinascita. All’inizio ciò che entrambi ricostruiscono è proprio quell’amicizia spensierata che avevano e che Blake, anche grazie al suo fascino “selvaggio”, riesce a far tornare in lei, con i sorrisi e l’aiuto della dolcissima labrador Betsy.

« Nient'altro esiste in questo momento tranne me e lui, e la consapevolezza che è sempre stato in grado di farmi ridere meglio di chiunque altro. È sempre stato in grado di parlare alla mia anima e farla cantare.»

Il protagonista maschile ha una crescita in questa storia che procede piano, ma graduale: da una forte attrazione, che da ragazzi era una sorta di "cotta" latente, capisce di amare davvero Daisy e che il suo amore la rende forte, al punto tale di voler tornare in Inghilterra per partecipare al processo contro il suo ex.

« La vita ti dà delle possibilità. Dipende da te se le prendi. Si chiama libero arbitrio.»

Non solo una storia di amici che capiscono di amarsi, ma anche di consapevolezza degli sbagli e di seconde possibilità. Sicuramente in questo volume il rapporto con la natura e il rispetto degli animali sono il tema principale, e l’autrice riesce a descriverlo anche in relazione alle scelte di vita dei vari personaggi, senza apparire troppo scontato o forzato. Blake è il fratello del protagonista di un altro volume della serie, ma questa storia è del tutto indipendente dalla precedente e per questo leggibile indipendentemente.

RECENSIONE IN LINGUA

Ten years have passed since Daisy and Blake last saw each other, since that last evening at the lake, when she, a little high, found the courage to give him a kiss. Ten years and a whole life in two different parts of the continent, as she has returned to England and both have a different experience: Daisy is no longer the same, both in appearance and feelings. In a first part of the book it is precisely this that Blake does not want to accept. It is not only her hair but that carefree girl, of the summers at the lake, is no more: life has reserved many disappointments and sufferings, not least a relationship that in addition to violence, has made her live moments that have led her to feel responsible for the death of her beloved dog. For this reason, returning to California is a sort of rebirth for Daisy. At the beginning what they both rebuild is precisely that carefree friendship they had and that Blake, also thanks to his "wild" charm, manages to bring back to her, with the smiles and the help of the sweet labrador Betsy.

«Nothing else exists in this moment except me and him, and the knowledge that he’s always been able to make laugh better than anyone. He’s always been able to speak to my soul and make it sing.»

The male protagonist has a growth in this story that proceeds slowly but gradually: from a strong attraction, which as boys was a sort of latent "crush", he understands that he really loves Daisy and that his love makes her strong, to the point of wanting to return to England to participate in the trial against her ex.

Not only a story of friends who understand that they love each other but also of awareness of mistakes and second chances. Surely in this volume the relationship with nature and respect for animals are the main theme, and the author manages to describe it also in relation to the life choices of the various characters, without appearing too obvious or forced. Blake is the brother of the protagonist of another volume of the series but this story is completely independent of the previous one and therefore readable independently.
